How is AI affecting graphic design?

It seems impossible to escape the onslaught of articles and news report currently appearing in the media concerning AI, (Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning), and how it is going to impact our lives. Whilst this is definitely true, it should not necessarily be treated as something to be wary or even afraid of.

It will affect all of us in many ways that are perhaps not even conceivable at the moment, and will also create industries that will thrive and benefit from the advantages that AI will undoubtedly bring.

One of those industries will be graphic design.

Adobe recently rolled out the Beta version of Photoshop and introduced designers like myself to Adobe Firefly.

Firefly has the ability to experiment with a whole series of tools to produce some stunning graphics and effects, including using text to generate images, often producing wild and surreal designs.

Examples include generative fills where you can use the brush tool to remove objects from an image or paint in new ones using descriptive text.

I loved the the application of textures and styles to text just using a text prompt, (feathered logo anyone?).

I can generate multiple colour variations of my vector designs just by dragging the design into the upload panel. This saves hours of work and speeds up the whole design process.

But perhaps the most impressive AI tool in this creative box is the ability to extend images! For example, imagine you have a landscape image of a lake with mountains in the background and you want to extend the width to fit a much wider aspect ratio. By simply increasing the canvas size and selecting the area and typing in a text prompt, the image is magically and seamlessly extended. I have even added a castle in the background.

  1. Extend background

2. Background extended

3. Add a castle

The explosive impact of AI will change the way designers like myself work, and will enable us to produce astounding and unique imagery and designs that would have been inconceivable or difficult to accomplish in the past.

I wholeheartedly welcome and embrace this new digital world and look forward to helping my clients fulfil their ideas and designs.

Kevin has been working in the creative industry for the last thirty five years and in that time has seen an enormous technological and cultural change. He has a thorough and in-depth experience of all design practices and an encyclopaedic knowledge of logo and corporate identity spanning many years.

Although nearly all commercial design work is now digitally produced, it still originates as an idea or concept and begins as a few lines sketched out on paper using good old fashioned pens or pencils. Kevin uses state-of-the-art hardware, software and lots of coffee, to enable the creation and development of these nascent ideas to become fully formed and pixel perfect. From branding through to video development for social media at Carvill we have found that the key to good design, and ultimately client satisfaction, is being able to share a rapport and empathy with our clients translating their requirements into tangible and engaging assets.
